Semester Goals: Spring 2020

January 15, 2020

And just like that, it’s a new semester. If you’ve been following along for a while, you may know that last spring semester was a rough one for me. I won’t get into it now, but if you want to read about it you can click here.

Considering the rough time I had last spring semester, I can’t help but hope that this one is better. I want to have hope. But honestly, I’m not sure if I’m more hopeful it will be better or scared that it won’t be. I know there’s a fear in the back of my mind that things will be the same and I just couldn’t go through that again.

So cheers to choosing hope. That’s the route I’ve decided to take. Whether or not that is foolish, only time will tell. But I hear you, enough about last year, let’s talk about this semester!

This semester I’m taking five courses:

International Trade, Labor Economics, Digital Photography, Video 1, and World Christianity. Digital Photography and World Christianity both fulfill core requirements I need to complete for graduation, and Video 1 is an elective. International Trade and Labor Economics are both 400-level Economics courses that get me two steps closer to completing my major!

So what are my goals?

Because I’m taking a lot of intensive, high-level courses (World Christianity fulfills my upper-level theology requirement), my first goal is to prioritize sleep. Yes, I usually say this, but this semester I’m also taking my first 8:00 am class. This time does not agree with my body, but I didn’t have a choice in the matter so I’m going to have to be really diligent about going to bed on time if I’m going to get the rest I need to make that 6:00 am wake up.

Speaking of my 8:00 am, making it to that class on time is a big goal of mine this semester. Thankfully the early mornings are for my photography course, so I don’t have to be wide awake and fully zoned in for intense work.

Nevertheless, I’m going to be (hopefully) waking up at 6:00 am every morning for consistency and do hope to make it a habit to get to all of my classes early this semester.

I’m also hoping that my photography course will allow me to shoot more for the blog while on campus. At home, my mom and my sister are a huge help with taking photos when I need them, but I want to get photos more regularly. This may be the key to blogging more consistently while at school! I guess I’ll have to wait and see. Between that and the new tripod I’ve just ordered, more photos should be happening.

Towards the end of last semester, I was finally given a small exercise to do at physical therapy. While I don’t have the equipment to do this exercise in my room at school, I’m hoping that the gym may have what I need. I’ve been given the go-ahead to do it on my own if that’s the case, so my next goal this semester is to explore the gym and see if they have the right machine!

Now, as a spring semester junior, something I have to start looking into is grad school. Is it the right move for me after graduation? I don’t know. But it is an avenue I could pursue as an economics major, and I want to be aware of all of my options. If not now, this research could always help me down the road! So there’s no harm in exploring programs and seeing if there’s anything I’m interested in. In the event that I do decide grad school is for me, I’ll need to start studying for the GRE! Better sooner than later.

My final goal for the semester is to apply for summer internships and put myself out there. No matter what comes of it, I want to practice writing cover letters and tailoring my resume to various positions.

Do you have any goals for this semester?

Or if you aren’t in school, do you have any goals for this season? Share them in the comments below! I’d love to hear from you.
