Sweet 27: Gluten-Free Bakery Review

March 12, 2021

Last week, I shared a review of the restaurant side of Sweet 27. Today, I’m sharing my thoughts and favorites from the bakery! Sweet 27 makes my favorite gluten-free cupcakes, and I can’t wait to share them with you.

Sweet 27 Bakery:

The bakery area of Sweet 27 is connected to the restaurant but also has its own exterior entrance. There’s an assortment of small tables and colorful chairs, adding to the bright and cheery atmosphere of the bakery. There’s a display case and a few coolers along the wall full of the day’s selections. Service is always speedy and you can order restaurant items from the bakery side too if you want to eat in a more casual setting or grab something to go!

Sweet 27 usually has about half of the cupcake display case filled with gluten-free and dairy-free cupcakes, so there are plenty of options! They also make cookies, breads, tarts, muffins, custom cakes, and seasonal baked goods. Everything is free of gluten, and other allergens are clearly marked.

Raspberries & Cream Cupcake

The Raspberries & Cream Cupcake from Sweet 27 was the first cupcake I ever tried from their bakery, and I don’t think I’ve ever made a trip since without picking one up. It’s a yellow cake with a raspberry filling, the icing balancing out the tartness of the raspberry with a touch of sweetness in each bite.

Cookies & Cream Cupcake

If you like chocolate cake and sweetness, this cupcake is for you. The cake is moist and satisfying, just like all of the cakes I’ve ever tried from Sweet 27, but the sweetness of the frosting on top is just a bit much for me. With that said, it’s still a really good cupcake! Just not one I feel the need to order again.

Chocolate Peanutbutter Cupcake

This cupcake also has a chocolate base and is topped with rich peanut butter icing. This icing is thick, and I tend to eat cupcakes like this as a cupcake sandwich (breaking the cake part in two and putting half on top of the icing) to help keep it from getting stuck to the roof of my mouth. I like the little difference in texture the bites with the mini chocolate chips have. This has to be a flavor combination I’m in the mood for, but when I am, this cupcake does the trick.

Chocolate Raspberry Ganache Cupcake

I didn’t know I liked chocolate ganache, I don’t even think I’d tried chocolate ganache before I first tried this cupcake. In the years since, I’ve tried a chocolate ganache cupcake at any gluten-free bakery I’ve found that makes them, and none can even come close to the Chocolate Raspberry Ganache Cupcake from Sweet 27. The chocolate cake has a raspberry filling and a thick chocolate ganache topping that is simply delectable. If I want something chocolatey, I will make sure to pick one of these up when I’m stopping by Sweet 27!

Other Favorites:

Sandwich Rolls

I couldn’t write a review of Sweet 27’s gluten-free bakery and not include their sandwich rolls.

Both the sandwich rolls and the dinner rolls from Sweet 27 are the best gluten-free rolls I’ve ever had. Period. There’s a thickness to them that I’ve never found in another gluten-free bread that always hits the spot. With these rolls there’s never a worry that they’ll fall apart on you, and the flavor is something totally unique.

Muffins

Like the cupcakes, Sweet 27’s muffins are perfectly moist, and like the bread, they have a satisfying heaviness to them. The density of the muffin makes it filling, and they always have just the right amount of toppings. My favorite are the chocolate chip muffins!

Pecan Pie

A couple of years back, my dad got me the last pecan pie from Sweet 27 the day before Thanksgiving. It was truly heroic because these pies are incredible! I now get one every year, knowing I’ll have something delicious and that fits my dietary needs, and no one in my family needs to worry about preparing a gluten-free pie crust (it hasn’t always worked out that well for us). If you’re in the Baltimore area and need a good pie around the holidays, I cannot recommend Sweet 27 enough.

And that wraps up my review of the Sweet 27 Bakery!

Sweet 27 is my go-to for gluten-free cupcakes and is one of the best discoveries I’ve made when it comes to gluten-free food in general. If you haven’t check out my review of their restaurant and favorite items to order, click here to check it out!
